Is Mark Driscoll’s Behavior Authoritarian and Abusive?

Controlling Personalities in the Church: The Warning Signs

The second in a series of articles on the Wittenberg Gate website

Authoritarian Leadership and Lack of Accountability

“God, knowing our weak frame, has given us a structure for church authority. He tells us to have a multitude of counselors, all under the authority of King Jesus. Abusers, however, wish to operate on their own. They want to be king of the congregation Elders/Deacons. Their approach to this may be very subtle. A church council may be in place, but each elder is hand-picked and known to be cooperative. (goodbye and good riddance to the problematic pastors, AND any outspoken members!) They may be inexperienced churchmen who got their elder training only from this pastor,
(Does this sound familiar? Perhaps Jamie Munson? Anybody else? PH needs both hands and a couple of toes to count them!) or overworked businessmen who are relieved to let the pastor make all the decisions. The elders themselves may be manipulated and lied to and have information kept away from them(not to mention the membership!)

  1. Thus saith the Lord.
    Amen.

Oh, one second – you mean that wasn’t Scripture?

    😉

Did anyone watch the question and answer session last night with Matt Chandler, John Piper, and Mark Driscoll? It was unbelievable!!! Both Chandler and Piper spoke directly against the leadership structure of Mars Hill (probably without knowing it)! Mark did not make one comment about the MH leadership group while both Chandler and Piper were so humble in their positions that it just ‘screamed’ at Driscoll to submit to the authority of Christ and repent!!! Did anyone else see this?

It took Piper 10 – 15 years to get his church leadership structure / bylaws revised to where it follows scripture. It took Driscoll a few months to get MH bylaws to be un-scriptural. It was truly amazing to watch this interchange between these men and see Mark Driscoll not say one word about MH leadership.

MN members and attenders cannot let this opportunity go by. Speak out to Pastor Mark and ask and pray for him to review that discussion with two people he admires and respects that totally slams MN leadership.

Praying that truth will come . .

    Tom

Tom, would you mind contacting PH at knowyouareloved@yahoo.com ?

  4. Aaron Allen says:

Will there be a video or audio link of Piper’s discussion? I am interested to hear what he had to say since many have contacted him to speak with MH elders about what has happened as a possible means to confront them or bring them to repentance and reconciliation.

Just stopping in to say I’m sorry to hear about the struggles going on at MH. You are not alone in this abuse of power battle. You are all in the prayers of many who have been through much the same thing.

  6. SML says:

I’d sure love to see a video or hear an audio link from Wednesday’s session with Piper, Chandler, and Driscoll. Is there anything that someone across the US can access?

  7. SS says:

Love that the only references given in the articles on the Wittenberg Gate are to what psychologists believe. You’ve biblically shot your argument in the foot with that one. Goes back to the garden and the choice Adam and Eve made. Their own ability to determine right and wrong (The knowledge of Good and Evil)for themselves. This is nothing but the dependence on human intellect. The choice we should be making is the tree of life. Utter dependence on God in all things. You don’t like the choice God has made to put Mark Driscoll over a ministry that has brought many to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Then the only place for you is to be on your knees before God with your concerns. Can’t trust God to take care of the situation, then you need to. You were saved by grace, continue to walk by grace and should learn to show that same measure of grace toward all, including Mark. Can’t do that? Then remember these words from our Lord ” Forgive us our sins, as we forgive others”. You walk without God’s blessing in this matter. It’s time you remove this divisive blog from the net. You are certainly not doing anything to promote unity and love for one another within the Church. Maybe Marks decision was wrong. I can’t say. He’s responsible to God alone for his actions. But your sin doesn’t solve anything in this matter. What is your sin? You have questioned the authority of God in appointing Mark as head of the Mars Hill Church movement. So take it up with Him. Don’t take up sides with the enemy in this matter. You only bring shame to the name of Christ. When God calls you to your own ministry you can stand before God accountable for your decisions in it. Until then stop thinking so highly of yourself. For your works here are as “filthy rags”.

Uhh, SS, if you truly believe that, wouldn’t that also be true for the author of this blog? Quit being a zombie hypocrite, and start holding Mark accountable to Biblical standards.

Dear God, I just wasted 10 minutes of my life reading this all…God is either laughing, rolling his eyes or about to strike us all with diarrhea.
